"The bicycle is the most efficient machine ever created. Converting calories into gas, a bicycle gets the equivalent of three thousand miles per gallon." -- Bill Strickland

On May 14th, along with Bike DFW and Preston Hollow Bike, Friends of Bachman Lake hosted cycling enthusiasts to come tune up bikes. Over 50 bikes were repaired and we got to watch local artist Ebony Lewis create an amazing image of biking around Bachman. See more photos and read up about the event in our blog post.

"The trees can breath" - taking care of the treasures we have

Another one of our 2022 goals is to start on the Bachman greenbelt trails. We really took a hit with COVID and are still working to raise the necessary funds for the pedestrian bridges. In order to accelerate the work after all the time we lost we are looking at a dual-pronged approach. We are still investing the money we've raised to have Greenspace Dallas (formerly Groundwork Dallas) cut trails through the privet and build the bridges AND we have been lobbying over the last year for the Parks Department to step up and assist. After all, the mess we are dealing with is a result of 30 to 40 years of abandonments of this area. We had major progress this past week and owe a big thank you to the Dallas Parks Department for stepping up and organizing the removal of invasive privet around groupings of mature trees in the Bachman Greenbelt. It is a small section, but most importantly, it is a start!

The first image on the far left shows how the invasive privet was choking the trees. The second image shows the cleared spaces and the third is a close-up. Super impressive!

Adopt-A-Shoreline!

Friends of Bachman Lake has donated supplies to jump-start an Adopt-A-Shoreline program. One of our goals for 2022 is to better engage schools and businesses around Bachman Lake Park. By making grabbers, gloves and trash bags readily available to borrow at the Bachman Lake Recreation Center, we hope to jump-start this effort.

If you have an interested group, just go to the Bachman Lake Recreation Center and you will be provided the supplies to help keep our shoreline clean! Better yet, if you want to adopt a section of the shore contact us at bachmanlakefriends@gmail.com.

Dallas Rowing Club offers lessons

There is still time to participate in the June rowing classes offered by the Dallas Rowing Club. There are adult and junior sessions. What's even better is that these lessons are free to DISD students! Learn more and register below. Lessons start soon!

Planning for more tree groves

There is a Chinese proverb that says that the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago and the second best time is now. Well, that is what Friends of Bachman Lake is working on in conjunction with the Dallas Parks Department. Our goal is to plant 500 trees in the next 3 years. We are targeting our first planting in October.

More to come!
