Friends of Bachman Lake Newsletter - January 2023

Value everyone's contribution and treat everyone with respect.” ― Michelle Obama

A lot of good things happened in 2022 and we have you to thank!

We ended the last Neighbors in the Know meeting for 2022 with a fabulous presentation by the design team for the Bachman Lake Skate Park, Team Pain. The skate park is planned for the corner of Webb Chapel Ext and Denton Drive and construction is slated to start this year.

Click through to our blog post to see the plan details!

Bachman Lake is bordered by some very busy streets, one of them, Webb Chapel Extension, is particularly bad in terms of pedestrian/vehicular accidents - the type of accidents where the car wins.

Did you do a double take from the previous article and notice that Webb Chapel Ext is also the location at Bachman Lake for the Skate Park? We feel pretty strongly that the City needs to do something to address speeding and pedestrian safety, and to that end, we've recommended a road diet.

To get more information on the issues with Webb Chapel Ext and proposals to address, check out our in depth article.

In November, JP Morgan Chase donated a Little Free Library for the large playground at Bachman Lake. In December, the Preston Hollow Rotary Club added another one at the little kid playground by the Recreation Center. We are so grateful to both organizations' efforts to further literacy and getting books in the hands of children! Kudos also to Preston Hollow People for their great reporting on the topic.

Community Service at it's Finest

We were sooooo busy in November with two major events at Bachman Lake: Rowers Care for Trees and Gables Day. We are truly grateful for your efforts to improve the community!

November 12th was a crisp, fall day, perfect for taking care of trees! The Dallas Rowing Club did a fantastic job planting new trees and removing invasive privet around the young trees growing by the water. They also helped pick up trash along the shoreline and left it neat as a pin! While they were busy doing all that, the Cub Scout troop from St. Rita Catholic School took care of some of the oldest trees at Bachman Lake by spreading mulch.

November 18th was not quite as sunny but The Gables team showed up, all 150 of them! What a transformation of the playground and pavilion areas and kudos for a super job cleaning, power washing, mulching and planting!

A quote from one one the Gables team members:

"I just wanted to say thank you for the opportunity to be a part of this amazing team this year. When I got up on Friday and looked at the forecasted temp, my first thought was Ughh! I don’t want to do this today. My attitude quickly changed when I assembled together with all of the amazing Gables associates. My personal mission statement that I set for myself years ago is to make a positive difference in someone’s life every day. I left feeling fulfilled that I am all of you had done that. My legs were tired and back hurt, but the joy of working together with all of our associates to make a difference for our community was so rewarding. Count me in as part of the team for next year! Hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving!"
